As I always try to learn something new…I finally listened to my son, Frank, who has been telling me for ages that I should learn to play Chess!
He said it is really a “life lesson” as you can apply its precepts to one’s daily life. Well he is right! And It has become my new obsession. I love it. I started with Bobby Fischer’s book which is titled “Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess”
It is easy to follow and is in the form of a workbook. That really got me interested. But now I am taking lessons from Mimi McCroskey, [email protected] , who teaches private and group lessons. She recently gifted me with the book “First Chess Openings” by Eric Schiller. It made me realize that her teaching method of instructing me in the classic chess openings along with patience is a great way of getting a proper start. It is very well-paced and a simple way to learn. It is divided into white openings and black openings.
Whether you have played in years past or are starting cold I encourage you to begin now!! It’s a great game!
And by the way, have you ever seen a vertical chess board like the one below? It is mounted on the wall and has acryllic shelves that hold the chess pieces as well as a “last move” and “check” marker to keep track. This is what I started learning on. I take a pic of my move and text it to my opponent…receiving his move in return, unless we are both on hand. Cool huh?

This video is self-explanatory. It is two exercises that I do at the same time. One is for your core, and the other is something I learned years ago in modeling school. I was told if I did this exercise I would never get a double chin and I listened!! So far it’s worked.
Check it out.
